About the PDC World Darts Championship

The PDC World Darts Championship is held annually at London’s Alexandra Palace from mid/late December to early January, with the famous Sid Waddell Trophy up for grabs.

The WDC previously featured 96 players, but it was increased to 128 for the 2025/26 event.

  •  The top 40 players qualify automatically from the PDC Order of Merit (the top 32 are seeded).

  • This is followed by the next 40 players from the ProTour Order of Merit.

  • The remaining 48 places are handed to players from various tours and qualifiers.

Unlike previous years, now all players – including the seeds – enter at round one.

The competition format is set play darts. Each set is the best of five legs – so the first to three legs. Players need to win by two clear legs in deciding sets.

The number of sets to win a game depends on the round of the tournament.

  • The first and second rounds are best-of-5
  • The third and fourth rounds are best-of-7
  • The quarter finals are best-of-9
  • The semi-finals are best-of-11
  • The final is best-of-13 match

The tournament is known for its passionate crowd decked out in fancy dress, iconic walk-ons and top-level darts.

Key Players to Watch at the World Championships

When the World Championships roll around again in late 2026, all eyes will be on one man – Luke Littler.

Littler took the crown in 2025/26 for his second consecutive World Darts Championship title. He became only the fourth player ever to retain the title, following in the footsteps of Phil Taylor, Adrian Lewis, and Gary Anderson.

Recent headline contenders include Luke Humphries and Gian van Veen, alongside perennial threats such as Michael van Gerwen, Gerwyn Price, Michael Smith, and Peter Wright.

Other consistent performers likely to be in the mix include Rob Cross, Nathan Aspinall, and Stephen Bunting.

The draw and seeding can create value spots in the outrights and stage‑of‑elimination markets, so keep your eyes peeled in the run-up to the tournament.

Essential World Championship Terms for Bettors

When betting on the World Championship, it helps to keep up with all the darts lingo, including:

  • Oche: The line players must stand behind when throwing.
  • Set: A group of legs – first to three legs typically wins the set.
  • Leg: A single game of 501 – players must finish on a double or bullseye.
  • Break of Throw: Winning a leg when the opponent threw first.
  • 180: Maximum score with three darts.
  • 9‑Dart Finish: The minimum number of darts to win a 501 leg (a perfect leg).
  • Big Fish: A 170 checkout (T20, T20, Bull).
  • Bullseye: The centre (50 points). The outer bull is 25.
  • Sudden‑Death Leg: The final leg used if a deciding set remains tied after the tiebreak.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the seeding and draw affect betting?

Seeding means that the top players can’t meet each other in the early rounds of the draw. It also enables you to see structured pathways for the biggest players to make the final. You’ll see when the top seeds can potentially meet and can look for value bets in potential upsets.

How do set/leg handicaps work?

Handicaps put one player at a virtual disadvantage (the favourite) and the other at a virtual advantage (the underdog). Say you bet on a player with a -2.5 set handicap, they must win by three sets or more for the bet to be successful.

Is there a 9-dart finish market and specials?

Yes, at BoyleSports you can bet on whether there will be a 9-dart finish in any match at the World Darts Championship, from a first-round encounter to the final.

What are the most popular betting markets for the World Darts Championship?

Some of our most popular darts betting markets for the World Darts Championship include outright betting on the title winner and stage of elimination. When it comes to match betting markets, popular bets include correct set score and player 180s.

Who are the past winners of the PDC World Darts Championship?

Luke Littler became only the fourth player to retain his PDC World Darts Championship crown, with his win in 2025/26 following his maiden triumph in 2024/25. Other recent winners include Luke Humphries in 2024 and Michael Smith in 2023. Top of the pile in the all-time stakes is Phil Taylor with 14 wins, followed by Michael van Gerwen with three.
