Course specialist HICKORY didn't get to show what he is capable of when mid-division over 7f here last time, when he had too much to do once in the clear, and he's the selection with the return to 1m a firm plus. Excellent Believe had no luck at the Curragh last month on his second stable start yet still managed to finish third, and he is second choice ahead of the improving Gosden 3yo Gavriel. Doncaster winner Scoville is another to consider, along with last year's runner-up Ebt's Guard, while Whip Cracker is an interesting outsider back up to 1m.[Ben Hutton] Show less
Spotlight: 4yo whose form has been up and down during his light career but he finished strongly for third at Newbury (7f, good to firm) in August and capitalised on the return to 1m to win at Doncaster (1m, good) last month; he travelled really well last time and a 4lb rise may not stop him today.
Spotlight: Made it two wins from four starts when scoring in good style on handicap debut here (1m2f, good to firm) last month; fared best of the larger near-side group when close fourth in the Cambridgeshire at Newmarket (1m1f, good to firm) three weeks ago and this unexposed 3yo is a leading contender off a mark 2lb higher than last time.
Spotlight: 8yo who has been in career-best form this year and posted course win number four when scoring over C&D (good) last month; got going too late once in the clear over 7f here (good to firm) a fortnight ago, when appearing to still be in good form, and he's high on the list now back up to 1m.
Spotlight: Beaten 13 times since his last win last August but he's run several mighty races in the meantime, including when beaten a neck in this last year and when third of 17 to Scoville at Doncaster (1m, good) last time; this two-time course winner could be firmly in the mix once more.
Spotlight: Favourite in a handicap at the Curragh (7f, yielding) three weeks ago on his second stable start and did well to finish third having endured a torrid passage; there's mileage in his mark judged on his peak form for Jack Channon, namely a Group 3 second at Haydock (1m, good) last September, and he could play a leading role back up to 1m if he gets the breaks.
Spotlight: Third in the Royal Hunt Cup over C&D (good to firm) in June and won at Sandown (1m, good to firm) next time; a line can be put through his run at Glorious Goodwood (hampered) and he was beaten only 3l when ninth in the Cambridgeshire at Newmarket (1m1f, good to firm) last time; each-way claims.
Spotlight: Merely mid-division at Doncaster (1m, good) last month but his form figures at Ascot read 222 (1m, good to firm/good; twice in big fields), with the latest of those in August and he was a good second at York (1m, good to soft) next time; has an each-way shout if leaving his latest run behind.
Spotlight: 3yo who won a handicap here (7f, good) in May and has run well in Listed and Group 3 races over 1m subsequently; down the field in a Group 2 at Newmarket three weeks ago but he was slowly away and detached early; not ruled out back in a handicap.
Spotlight: Went close at Newmarket (1m1f, good to firm) in May and hasn't run badly in competitive handicaps on his next two starts, including the Royal Hunt Cup over C&D, but he needs something extra in a first-time visor (replacing cheekpieces) if he's to come out on top today.
Spotlight: Reserve; returned to his best form to win a seven-runner handicap at Goodwood (1m, good) last month by a neck; carries a 6lb penalty in this much hotter race and could prove vulnerable; seventh of 20 in this last year.
Spotlight: 6yo who has been better than ever this season; third of 18 in the Golden Mile at Goodwood (1m, good to firm) in July and again ran well when fourth of 13 to Hickory over this C&D (good) last month; he has the same career-high mark as last time but might have an each-way squeak.
Spotlight: 8yo who has been up and down this year and was soundly beaten at Longchamp (1m2f, good) a fortnight ago; however, he's won two big-field handicaps this season at the Galway festival (8.5f, yielding) in July and at the Curragh (1m2f, good) last month, and this Irish challenger is not discounted.
Spotlight: Three Group 3 wins, the latest at Haydock last month (1m, heavy; versatile ground-wise); however, this is a very tough task off such a lofty mark on his first handicap run since 2024, even with Toby Moore removing 7lb.
Spotlight: Progressive since joining this Irish stable, finishing third of 17 in a handicap at the Galway festival (8.5f, yielding) in July and winning a Listed race at Killarney (1m, good) in August; good third under big weight in Listed race at Listowel (1m, yielding) last time; might not be far away.
Spotlight: Classy for the Gosdens in his prime and he finished third in a Listed race as recently as last November; however, he was beaten a long way at Goodwood in July on his sole outing this year and might be best watched on this stable debut; still owned by Wathnan Racing.
Spotlight: Returned from a break with a convincing handicap win at Southwell (7f, AW) in August; of interest on that form but his best performances have come on AW or soft/heavy going and he was down the field in a Listed race at Redcar (7f, good) a fortnight ago; something to prove on the forecast ground.
Spotlight: Won at Newmarket (1m, good) and Epsom (8.5f, good to soft) in the first half of the year but hasn't come up to scratch subsequently and needs to get back on track in first-time cheekpieces.
Spotlight: In good form over 1m/10.3f (good) prior to winning at Chester (7.5f, good to soft) in August; kept on well for respectable fifth in Listed race at Newbury (7f, good) four weeks ago and could build on that latest performance now back up to 1m; no surprise to see a big run.
Spotlight: Four-time turf winner who defied top weight on his stable/AW debut at Newcastle (7f) in June; however, he was tailed off in a Listed race at Sandown (1m, good) last month and it's hard to be confident after that.
Spotlight: Good fourth in the Group 3 Commonwealth Cup Trial here (6f, good to firm) in April 2025 but his subsequent stand-out performances, including a commanding win at Haydock (7f) two starts ago, have come on soft ground; given today's forecast conditions it may prove best to look elsewhere.
