It is hard to be sure what difference any softening of the ground would make given the vast majority have shown their best turf form on good or firmer. MIA FANTASIA was a notably short-priced favourite for a big-field Glorious Goodwood nursery last month and did very well to finish sixth after enduring a troubled passage, so he has to be worth another chance. Shadow King is another who didn't enjoy the rub of the green in that same Goodwood contest and he is second choice ahead of Perfect Nation and Weleyff. Andrew Balding's strong record in this race earns Rising Tiger the final place on the shortlist. [Andrew Sheret] Show less
Spotlight: All runs over 7f on good to firm, overcoming a slow start to win comfortably at Carlisle on debut before third to Dr Rascal (Rising Tiger second) in novice at Ascot; on the back of those efforts he went off a hot favourite for a Glorious Goodwood nursery but didn't get the chance to show what he could do, meeting trouble on a couple of occasions and doing well to finish sixth of 18; that performance strongly suggests he can go close at the least off this mark with more luck in running.
Spotlight: Won novices at Lingfield (7f, AW) and Ffos Las (extended 7f, good) this summer; the fact he's gone off at 13-8 or shorter on all three starts suggest he's highly thought of by his leading yard, as do Group entries next month; handily drawn and Billy Loughnane is on him rather than stablemate Mirzimaan; interesting.
Spotlight: Runner-up on all three starts; had Mia Fantasia in third at Ascot (7f, good to firm) on the second occasion and narrowly denied by Roosike at Southwell (7f, AW; now meets that rival on identical terms) last time; stall 21 could be tricky but Andrew Balding's excellent record in this race (three wins since 2021, including last year) makes him a must for the shortlist.
Spotlight: Progressing well, winning five-runner races (7f, good to firm) for a novice at Ayr and nursery at Doncaster in recent weeks; made all with something to spare at the latter track and a 5lb rise may not prevent another bold bid with the Ed Bethell stable in flying form; engaged in the Group 2 Champagne at Doncaster next month.
Spotlight: 7f Redcar debut scorer (good) in May; faded out of things in the Chesham at Royal Ascot next time but different proposition with sights lowered when pipping Dubai Champion (non-runner here on Wednesday) in 6f Glorious Goodwood nursery (good to firm); a 5lb rise demands further improvement but Group entries next month point to him being well regarded by his top stable; the draw could have been kinder.
Spotlight: Has raced just at 6f; too green on debut but took a significant step forward with his defeat of 17 rivals at Newbury (good to firm) last month; bettered that form and would have won with a clearer passage when only just failing to get up at Newcastle (AW) since; should have more to offer now moving up to 7f for his nursery debut but Billy Loughnane seemingly prefers stablemate Perfect Nation.
Spotlight: Won a 6f novice at Nottingham (good) in early June; failed to fire in the Coventry at Royal Ascot but has bounced back with good seconds in 7f nurseries at Chester and Glorious Goodwood (a few of these rivals behind); didn't look entirely at ease on the course at Goodwood (hung right) and it's possible that this track will suit him better.
Spotlight: All starts over 7f on good to firm; took big step forward from debut fourth to Mia Fantasia when easily drawing clear by just over 7l at Brighton last month; backed that up when narrowly denied under a penalty at Yarmouth 18 days ago; looks on a competitive mark for his nursery debut.
Spotlight: First three starts over 6f, winning a Newcastle novice on the third; stepped up to 7f for his nursery debut and ran well for fifth (The Ginger Kid second) of 18 at Glorious Goodwood, albeit better positioned than some of today's reopposing rivals who finished behind him.
Spotlight: Has improved for a step up to 7f, winning a maiden at Ayr (good to firm) and nursery at Thirsk (good) in recent weeks; further progress possible but it will be needed off this 5lb higher mark.
Spotlight: Second success when getting up close home on nursery debut at Doncaster (extended 6f; good to firm; first-time blinkers); excuses when only midfield in a 7f Glorious Goodwood nursery the following week; his mark still looks favourable on the Doncaster form and his stable won this two years ago.
Spotlight: Chepstow debut win in the spring came on good to soft, so he wouldn't have any issues should the forecast rain arrive; hasn't built on that significantly but he's one of a few in this line-up who didn't enjoy much luck in running in the Glorious Goodwood nursery over this trip last month and a Listed race was simply too much for him at Salisbury last month.
Spotlight: Beaten a fair way when placed on first two outings and took a good step forward when holding on determinedly from the reopposing Rising Tiger in novice at Southwell (7f, AW) 24 days ago; meets that rival on the same terms.
Spotlight: Bath novice win came over an extended 5f but he looked suited by the return to 7f when never-nearer third of seven in Newmarket nursery (good to firm) 12 days ago; needs to build on that.
Spotlight: Got up close home to make a successful start to his nursery career over 6f at Pontefract (good) 44 days ago and the runner-up gave that form a boost when winning at Lingfield on Monday; the return to 7f may prompt more improvement but he is running off 9lb higher now (including 4lb out of handicap).
Spotlight: Made it sixth time lucky when seeing off three rivals in a 7f Catterick nursery (good to firm) 29 days ago; that was his first attempt at this trip but he's 5lb higher in a significantly stronger race now; also drawn widest.
Spotlight: His claims aren't obvious having finished well held in nurseries over 6f here (Big Cigar won) and 7f at Goodwood (behind five of these) on his last two starts; tongue tied first time; 3lb out of the handicap.
Spotlight: Behind several of these at Glorious Goodwood and first-time cheekpieces need to make a big difference.
