The eye is drawn to a clutch of unexposed Newmarket-trained 3yos who are all returning from various absences. Choosing between them isn't easy, but it will be disappointing if LIGHTING THUNDER isn't up to his opening mark and he gets a narrow vote over Godolphin pair Man Of Vision and Fort Rock (preferred in that order). River King and Beagle Bay are also in the picture, while Bearin Up is likely to give it a good go.[Richard Russell] Show less
Spotlight: Scored on his handicap debut (7f, soft) in May and he followed up at Sandown (1m, good) the following month, beating one who went on to win two strong handicaps; avoided quick ground in the summer but was a little underwhelming when beaten 10l at York (1m, soft) on his return three weeks ago; no surprise if he builds on that, though.
Spotlight: 650,000gns yearling who went close on his debut (good to soft) last September and finished runner-up again in 25-runner maiden at Newbury (again 1m, good) on his reappearance in April; the first and third from that race are currently rated in the high 90s, while the horse he beat when scoring by a head at Nottingham three weeks later is perched on 94; leading claims from this opening mark assuming he's ready to go after subsequent absence.
Spotlight: Below par at Ascot on his penultimate start but otherwise in good form this year and it was a second win of his campaign when beating nine others at Doncaster (1m, heavy; acts on a sound surface) last Saturday; 5lb rise and a not inconsiderable weight to contend with but he may not have reached his ceiling just yet.
Spotlight: 7f AW novice winner who made a bright start in handicaps when neck second of 11 here (6f, good to firm) in the spring; went backwards on his next two starts (again 6f) but doubled his tally on his first crack at a mile when narrowly landing six-runner handicap on the July course (good to firm) when last seen twelve weeks ago; first-time cheekpieces worn that day are retained and he's unexposed at this trip; respected.
Spotlight: 2-2 in 7f Kempton novices (AW) last autumn; third of nine on his seasonal/handicap debut here (good to firm) in May and he went close on the other Newmarket track (also 1m, good; first-time cheekpieces) in June; absent since, and he's shaped as though he could do better over further, but it's unlikely we've seen the best of him and he'll need considering on this comeback; has been gelded.
Spotlight: Steadily progressive filly who picked up a Class 5 C&D handicap (good) in the spring and scored again at Hamilton (8.5f, good; made all) in June; registered her best effort yet when just nabbed over C&D (soft) last Thursday; goes back up in grade but she could make her presence felt.
Spotlight: Won at Chester (7.5f, good) on his May reappearance and turned in a good effort when fourth in the Bunbury Cup (7f, good to firm) on the other Newmarket track in July; back in form when third of 12 at Goodwood (1m, good to soft) three weeks ago and he has each-way claims from the same mark.
Spotlight: Not at his best last year on final three outings for William Haggas and same story this season on his three runs (good/good to firm) for Jack Channon; now just 2lb above the mark he claimed the 2025 Lincoln from on good to soft, however, so there's a handicapping case to be made; probably doesn't want the ground to dry out.
Spotlight: Unraced at two; won Chepstow maiden (1m2f, good) and Carlisle handicap (1m3f, soft) in his initial spell with James Owen and it was a fairly encouraging return for this yard when beaten 3l at Yarmouth (1m1f, good to soft) last month; again raced freely when disappointing next time, however, so maybe his new hood and drop back to 1m can assist.
Spotlight: Won a Sandown handicap (7f, soft; acts on quicker) last August; no wins this year but he's been in the frame in five of his eight starts and was third of 17 at Leicester (7f, good to soft) 18 days ago; same mark and stays 1m but this could be warmer.
Spotlight: Ex-Irish and made a flying start for current stable, winning at Kempton (1m, AW) in July and second of 20 at Glorious Goodwood (7f, good to firm) four weeks later; swiftly over a blip when fourth in Class 3 Ascot classified (1m, good to firm) at the start of this month and he's now back on his Goodwood mark; not discounted.
Spotlight: Two handicap wins last year (7f/1m, good to soft/AW) and he won a third when scoring off 2lb higher at Redcar (1m, good) in May; visor worn for his last two wins was missing when suffering a heavy defeat last time and is again absent.
Spotlight: Multiple winner who made it win number twelve when scoring over C&D (good) in May; now 2lb lower but he could only beat one home when 10l adrift at Bath (1m, good to soft; handles that ground) 12 days ago; staging a revival won't be easy in this company.
Spotlight: His third in the Italian 2,000 Guineas (1m, good; first-time cheekpieces) in May was up with his better efforts but he's been beaten around 12l in two subsequent handicaps; returns from a break with no headgear having been gelded.
